Volunteer Trails Committee Chair
Bow Open Spaces, Inc., a qualified land trust in Bow, is looking for an individual to fill the position of Volunteer Trails Committee Chair.
The Trails Committee Chair is a volunteer leadership position responsible for overseeing the planning, development, and maintenance of our trails system. This individual will lead a team of dedicated volunteers, including trail supervisors and maintainers, to ensure the trails are safe, enjoyable, and accessible for all users.
Key Responsibilities:
Trail Planning and Management:
Work with the Board of Directors to identify and prioritize trail needs and projects.
Familiarize yourself with and inspect all of our trails.
Develop an annual trails budget, including grant and funding opportunities.
Assess and procure all supplies and materials for the trail work season.
Volunteer Management:
Recruit, train, and support a team of trail supervisors and maintainers.
Delegate tasks and responsibilities to committee members.
Foster a positive and collaborative volunteer environment.
Recognize the efforts and contributions of volunteers.
Coordination and Communication:
Serve as the primary point of contact for the Trails Committee.
Communicate regularly with the Board of Directors.
Provide regular updates and reports on trail conditions and volunteer activities.
Safety and Standards:
Ensure all trail work is conducted according to safety practices.
Implement and support the organization's policies and procedures regarding trail maintenance and use.
Address and resolve issues that arise on the trails and request additional support as needed.
Qualifications
Good organizational and leadership skills.
Experience working with volunteer groups.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Trail planning, maintenance, or building experience is preferred, but not required.
Basic knowledge of operating equipment (e.g., chainsaws, string trimmers) is a plus.
Understanding of local land use laws.
Ability to lift and carry heavier tools and equipment.
Time commitment
The time commitment for this position can vary depending on the specific needs of the trails system and the level of volunteer engagement. Initially, the Chair may need to dedicate more time to establishing the committee and developing plans, potentially including meetings every few weeks. Once established, monthly meetings and ongoing tasks are likely to be the primary commitment.
